    Description

Genuine gold leaf on rolls made by Swift and Sons of Hartford, Ct.  This is an original tin containing its full complement of 1/8 inch rolls in original unopened packing.  All rolls are 67 feet long.  The gold color is XXD, the most popular shade.  Roll leaf is usually used on a special cushion originated by a competitor of Swift, the Coe Company.  They also sold gold leaf on rolls.  The Coe's Cushion and how it is used is seen in the last two images.  The invention of rolled gold or ribbon gold leaf was to accomplish two things; namely, speed up time and eliminate waste.  It is extremely time consuming to cut sheets of gold leaf in narrow strips and transfer the strips to the surface.  Immediately you can see how quicker it is to use pre-cut narrow leaf by picking it up on the tool itself.
Anyone doing gold tooling on books, leather desk tops, etc will find this process intriguing and incredibly efficient.
