Description:
A ring modulator mixes your input signal with an internal voltage controlled oscillator (VCO).  The sum and difference of those two signal's frequencies are combined and sent to the output.  So, if you play an A (440Hz) while the VCO is set at 1000Hz, the output will be the combination of a 1440Hz signal (the sum) and a 560Hz signal (the difference).
Since the interval, or relationship, between the two output frequencies of a ring modulator is established mathematically rather than musically (octave, 3rd, 5th, etc.), the ring modulator is capable of producing a wide range of very odd and discordant sounds, ranging from Daleks and 1960s sci-fi alien UFO sounds to gong and bell-like tones.
The RING BOMB ring modulator is based on a design by Craig Anderton which utilizes a phase-locked loop (PLL) to form a balanced modulator.
Controls:
FREQ
: sets the frequency (pitch) of the internal oscillator (VCO)
RING
: volume of the ring modulated output
CLEAN
: volume of the clean, unaffected input signal that is mixed with the ring modulated output
TONE
: switches between a normal and treble boosted output
MODE
: switches between two different ring modulator sounds
SEND / RETURN
: effects loop for patching other effects into the clean signal path
