1758 JAMAICA Silver "5 PENCE" Jamaican >GR< COUNTERSTAMP on a HALF REAL of PERU
    Description
    This is a rare, silver
    "5 Pence"
from Jamaica. It had started out as a
    "Pillar Type"
One Half Real in 1758 when it was struck at the Lima mint in Peru. But somehow it got itself to the Caribbean island of Jamaica where it was counterstamped or countermarked on both sides, turning it into a
    "5 Pence"
    piece.
In 1758 The Jamaican Assembly authorized stamping a certain amount of Spanish milled coinage, thus producing the first authorized silver coinage for Jamaica. A "G M" monogram was the official Jamaican counterstamp but the coins were all stamped on both sides. Apparently with differing reverse marks. This is one of those rare pieces.
    Weight: 1.49 Gram, 17 Millimeter, .903 Silver.

    The Coin:
A very nice example, it earned the dirt and marks but it does not look like it saw a lot of use as there is very little wear. A rare coin. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
